The academics of a high school are very important as this is determined by graduation rates, test scores and students’ proficiency in English and Math. While the graduation rate at Coast High School is high at 84%, many of the students aren’t graduating with UC/CSU entrance requirements. Students at Coast High are showing an above average proficiency in English at 55% with the state average being 49% but only a 22% proficiency in Math with the state average being 38%. There are only 3 advanced courses being offered at Coast High with one in arts, one in career and one in STEM.

It is expected of a high school to give proper attention to students who are falling behind and students from difficult backgrounds are often those falling behind. The environment can help parents understand where exactly they’re sending students on a daily basis. Currently, the student body is made up of 57% White, 22% Hispanic, 10% Asian, 5% American Indian, 5% Two or More races, and 1% Black students. There is currently 56% female students and 44%male. On the brighter side of the ranking, we see that the ratios for students to teachers are better than average at 17 students to 1 teacher; the state average is 22 to 1. There are also 139 students to 1 counselor where the state average is 830 students to 1 counselor. This means the school has the staff it needs to improve the ranking and the success of its students.
