What is a Driving Record

A driving record or motor vehicle report is a public record. This record tracks your driving history. Any offenses you have will show up on your driving record for anywhere from 3 to 10 years. The length of time is determined by the severity of the offense and the state in which you live. Name, sex, address, license number, status, expiration date, points, DUIs, fines, suspensions, revocations, violations, and convictions can all be found on your driving record. The only things that are not included in your record are non-moving violations and any non-driving related criminal history.

Are Driving Records Public Info

Driving records are public information. That means anyone can view a driving record. However, to get a certified copy of your driving record you will need to apply for it at the DMV. Many people use driving records for insurance purposes. But education, employment, and some personal life situations can be affected by your driving record. While a driving record is public info, that doesn’t mean that anyone can view the information. In order to obtain a driver’s record, you will need to already have the majority of the person’s private info. Obtaining a driving record requires authorization.

How to Look Up Your Driving Record

The most common way to find your driving record is to request a copy from the DMV. The DMV offers requests for a driving record in person or online. However, if you submit a request online, the record you receive will not be certified. The only way to get an official copy you will need to fill out a form and either mail it in or submit it in person at the DMV. You could also go through third-party repositories to find public documents such as a driving record. But again, these will not be certified documents and could contain errors.
